Siri is without doubt one of the top attractions on the Apple iPhone 4S, but it’s far from the only voice assistant in town. Here are five great Android voice command apps that can talk the talk just as well.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich handset to hit the market, and among the improvements that Google’s latest OS brings to the Android community is improved voice assistant features, which allow you to control your smartphone using nothing more than your own voice.
But it’s largely only since the Apple iPhone 4S launched with the much-publicised Siri that the average smartphone user has even cared about voice assistant apps, so it might be a surprise to discover that the Android Market has had a good few to choose from for a while now, and even more now that they’re the latest must-have. Let’s pick out our top five…
Iris
In the spirit of direct competition we have Iris, which in case you hadn’t noticed is Siri spelled backwards. It’s the closest thing to an official Android response, and it apparently took just eight hours to piece the alpha version together. It’s no surprise, then, that Iris is a bit rough around the edges, but it should hopefully improve as the wrinkles are ironed out.
Vlingo Virtual Assistant
Around on Android long before Siri came along, Vlingo is a free voice assistant that does just about everything Siri can do, and lacks only the finishing touches and marketing drive that has made Siri a must-have mobile add-on for the Johnny-come-lately. A no-nonsense app that does what you ask it to – literally.
Speaktoit Assistant
Iris and Vlingo are better known, but Speaktoit has quickly become a favourite for many Android users that have tried all three. It combines the attitude of Iris and the depth of Vlingo in a voice assistant that is entertaining and amusing, but not in a way that detracts from its ability to deliver the information you’re after in the first place.
Cluzee
Cluzee is nothing if not ambitious. It’s billed as a “talking intelligent personal digital assistant”, and attempts to up the stakes and deliver more subtle, intuitive and intelligent voice assistant features. Predictably, the first release leaves plenty to be desired – a pitfall of trying to set the bar so high in the first place – but this could be one to keep an eye on in the future.
Skyvi
Leaving aside its self-proclaimed title of “Siri for Android”, Skyvi is in fact a light-hearted voice assistant that specialises in the social side of things, working with Google Voice to provide voice access to the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Witty remarks and joke-telling has now also been programmed in to provide Skyvi with extra appeal. You have been warned.Desinger iPhone 4 cases
